Caravan Water Pump Not Working? Here's What to Check
That Sinking Feeling When the Tap Runs Dry
You turn the tap and... nothing. Or worse — it worked fine yesterday and now it's completely dead. If your caravan water pump has stopped working, don't panic. Nine times out of ten, it's something simple.
This is one of the most common questions we see in caravan groups, especially from newer travellers. Let's walk through the fixes, starting with the easiest.
Step 1: Check Your 12V Battery

Get Started FreeThis is the number one cause of caravan water pump failures, and it's the one most people overlook.
Your water pump runs on 12V power from your leisure battery (also called a house battery or auxiliary battery). If the battery is flat or low, the pump simply won't have enough juice to run.
Signs your battery is the problem:
- Pump and heating both stopped around the same time (especially overnight)
- Control panel lights are dim or flickering
- Other 12V devices (lights, USB chargers) aren't working either
- You've been off mains power for a while
The fix:
- Check your battery voltage on the control panel — anything below 12.0V means it's too flat to run the pump reliably
- If you're at a powered site, plug into mains power and let the charger top up the battery
- If you're free camping, run the vehicle engine for 30-60 minutes or use solar to charge
Pro tip: If your water pump AND heating both died overnight, it's almost certainly a flat battery. Both systems draw from the same 12V supply.
Step 2: Re-Prime the Pump
Water pumps need to be "primed" — meaning there needs to be water in the line between the tank and the pump. If air gets into the line (which can happen when you switch the pump off and back on), the pump can't create enough suction to pull water through.
How to re-prime:
- Make sure your water tank is at least quarter full
- Open a tap (hot or cold — doesn't matter)
- Switch the pump on at the control panel
- Wait 30-60 seconds — you might hear the pump straining, then it should catch and water will flow
- Once water is flowing, close the tap
If you're using an external water container (like a jerry can or portable tank):
- Check the cap is on tight
- Make sure the pickup pipe is sitting at the bottom of the container
- Check the hose connection isn't kinked or loose
Step 3: Check the Fuse
Every 12V circuit in your caravan is protected by a fuse. If the pump fuse has blown, the pump will be completely dead — no noise, no vibration, nothing.
Where to find it:
- Look at your 12V fuse panel (usually near the control panel or in a cupboard)
- Find the fuse labelled "Water Pump" or "Pump"
- Pull it out and check if the wire inside is broken
- Replace with a fuse of the same rating (usually 5A or 10A)
Never replace a blown fuse with a higher-rated one. If it blows again, there's an underlying electrical fault that needs professional attention.
Step 4: Check the Pump Switch
This sounds obvious, but caravan control panels can be confusing, especially if you're new to yours.
- Some caravans have a dedicated pump switch on the control panel
- Some have a master switch that controls all 12V systems
- Some have both — the master AND the pump switch need to be on
- Check your caravan's manual if you're unsure which switch is which
Step 5: Inspect the Pump Itself
If none of the above worked, it's time to look at the physical pump.
- Location: Usually under a seat or in a floor compartment near the water tank
- Listen: Put your ear near it and switch it on. Can you hear it trying to run?
- Humming but no water = likely airlock or blockage
- Clicking = could be a faulty pressure switch
- Silent = electrical issue (go back to battery and fuse checks)
- Check connections: Look for loose wires or corroded terminals
- Check the filter: Most pumps have a small inline filter that can clog with debris
When the Heating Cuts Out Overnight
If your heating is also cutting out overnight, this reinforces the flat battery diagnosis. Gas heating systems in caravans still need 12V power to run the fan and control board.
Common scenario:
- You arrive at camp, everything works fine
- You run heating, lights, pump, maybe a TV overnight
- By early morning, the battery is drained
- Heating dies, pump dies, you wake up cold with no water
Prevention:
- At powered sites: always plug in and check the charger is actually on
- Free camping: make sure your solar is keeping up, or limit overnight 12V usage
- Consider upgrading to a lithium leisure battery — they handle deep discharge much better than lead-acid
- Use a battery monitor (like a Victron BMV or Simarine Pico) to keep an eye on charge levels
Quick Diagnostic Flowchart
- Is anything 12V working? No → flat battery or master switch off
- Battery showing good voltage? No → charge from mains, solar, or vehicle
- Pump making any noise? No → check fuse, then wiring
- Pump humming but no water? → re-prime: open tap, wait 60 seconds
- Water flowing but intermittent? → check tank level, filter, or air in lines
Keep Your Pump Happy
A few simple habits will prevent most pump problems:
- Winterise properly — drain the system if storing your van in cold weather to prevent frost damage
- Clean the filter regularly, especially if you fill from bore water or creek water
- Don't run the pump dry — always switch it off when the tank is empty
- Carry a spare fuse of the correct rating
Most caravan water pump issues are simple fixes that don't need a technician. Start with the battery, work through the basics, and you'll be back to hot showers in no time.
