Ants in Your Caravan? How to Find the Nest and Get Rid of Them for Good

Why Surface Spray Doesn't Work

You've sprayed every ant you can see, wiped down the benches, and closed everything up. Next morning — they're back. Sound familiar?

The problem with surface spray is that it only kills the ants you can see. Ants leave invisible scent trails (pheromones) that guide the rest of the colony to food sources. Even after spraying, new ants follow the same path. To fix the problem, you need to find and destroy the nest.

Ants love caravans because they offer shelter, warmth, and crumbs. Common nesting spots include:

  • Wall cavities — the gap between the inner and outer walls is prime ant real estate
  • Under the floor — especially near water damage or damp timber
  • Behind kickboards and cupboard backing panels
  • Pop-top roof mechanisms — hollow sections in the lifting mechanism are a favourite
  • Under the fridge — warm and undisturbed
  • Around plumbing — ants are attracted to moisture
  • Timber framing — any exposed or damp timber can harbour a nest

If you've got a pop-top or hybrid camper, check the roof mechanism first. The hollow sections are warm, sheltered, and rarely disturbed — perfect for a colony.

What Actually Works

Step 1: Gel Baits (Best Option)

Gel baits are the most effective way to eliminate an ant colony in a caravan.

  • Products: Advion Ant Gel, Maxforce Quantum, or similar
  • How they work: Worker ants eat the gel and carry it back to the nest, where it's shared with the queen and the rest of the colony. Within 1-2 weeks, the entire colony dies
  • Where to place them: Along ant trails, near entry points, inside cupboards, behind the fridge

Important: Don't spray insecticide near gel baits. You want the ants to reach the bait and take it home — if you kill them with spray before they get there, the nest survives.

Step 2: Ant Powder for Entry Points

Use ant powder (like Coopex or similar permethrin-based powder) to treat entry points and cavities.

  • Puff powder into gaps around pipes, wiring holes, and where walls meet the floor
  • Treat around the jockey wheel, stabiliser legs, and any ground contact points
  • The powder acts as a long-lasting barrier that kills ants on contact

Step 3: Break the Scent Trails

Wipe down all surfaces with a white vinegar and water solution (50/50 mix). This destroys the pheromone trails and disorients any remaining ants. Pay attention to:

  • Bench tops and splashbacks
  • Inside cupboards
  • Along walls and window sills
  • Around the door frame and entry step

Prevention: Stop Them Coming Back

Once you've dealt with the infestation, these habits will keep them away:

  • Seal all food in airtight containers — even pasta, rice, and cereal boxes
  • Wipe down surfaces after cooking and eating
  • Don't leave pet food bowls out overnight
  • Empty bins regularly — food scraps are an open invitation
  • Sprinkle ant powder around stabiliser legs, jockey wheel, and levelling blocks when you set up camp
  • Check for damp — ants are attracted to moisture, so fix any leaks or condensation issues
  • Inspect after storage — check the van before your first trip of the season, especially if it's been parked on grass or soil

When You're at Camp

A few quick things you can do at each campsite:

  1. Sprinkle ant powder in a ring around each stabiliser leg and the jockey wheel
  2. Keep the entry step clear of food crumbs
  3. Store rubbish in a sealed bin outside the van
  4. If you see a trail forming, trace it back to the entry point and treat with powder or gel bait

When to Call a Professional

If you've tried baits and powder for two weeks and ants are still appearing, the nest may be deep inside a wall cavity or under the floor where DIY treatments can't reach. A pest controller with caravan experience can:

  • Use thermal imaging to locate hidden nests
  • Inject treatment into wall cavities
  • Apply professional-grade barriers

Expect to pay $150-$300 for a caravan pest treatment.

The Bottom Line

Surface spray is a temporary fix. Gel baits that the ants carry back to the nest are the real solution. Combine baits with ant powder at entry points and good food hygiene, and you'll have an ant-free caravan.
